The Importance of At-home Dental Care

Daily at-home dental hygiene is the cornerstone of good oral health. Brushing removes plaque and bacteria from the teeth, as well as from the tongue, cheeks, and roof of the mouth. We recommend brushing your teeth with a fluoride toothpaste at least two times a day, in the morning and at night.

Your toothbrush, however, cannot reach the plaque and bacteria between your teeth. For this reason, the area between the teeth is particularly vulnerable to dental decay and disease. Flossing is the most effective way to remove plaque from this area, and daily flossing should be an integral part of your daily routine.

Professional Dental Care Is Equally Important

Dr. Wade is a caring dentist who offers dental cleaning appointments for the entire family. Regular check-ups with professional cleanings should be scheduled every six months to maintain health and identify any potential problems in their earliest stages. Professional cleanings remove hardened plaque, called tartar, from hard-to-reach areas like the gum line, in between the teeth, and the back molars. If left unchecked, plaque and tartar buildup can cause tooth decay and gingivitis, the early form of gum disease.

Most commonly, gum disease develops when plaque is allowed to build up along and under the gum line. If you are experiencing symptoms like inflamed or bleeding gums or persistent bad breath, you should see us right away. Other symptoms may include sensitive or loose teeth, and receding gums. In cases of gum disease, we can perform a deep cleaning under the gum line.

Seeking Early Treatment

Regular dental cleanings and timely, effective treatment can stop gingivitis from progressing to periodontitis, the more serious stage of gum disease. Periodontitis is a condition that causes the gum tissue to recede and pull away from the teeth. Pockets can open up around the teeth and become infected, allowing bacteria to spread beneath the gum line. As a result, bone and connective tissue holding the teeth in place start to break down. Loss of permanent teeth can have a serious impact on oral health. The remaining teeth are destabilized, putting them at greater risk of loss, and the jawbone can begin to deteriorate. In addition, some studies indicate that the bacteria responsible for periodontitis can enter the bloodstream, negatively affecting your lungs, heart, and other parts of your body. Seeking early treatment will increase your chances of reversing damage from periodontitis and potentially prevent other serious health problems.
